Sterling Silver vs. Silver-Plated: How to Tell the Difference

This is the most common question we hear about silverware — and the most important one to answer before you visit. Sterling silver has real silver content throughout the metal. Silver-plated items have a thin layer of silver over a base metal (usually copper, nickel, or brass) and contain too little silver to be worth purchasing.

How to Read Your Silverware Stamps

Look for hallmarks stamped on the back of spoons and forks, or on the bottom of trays and tea services. Use this reference guide to identify solid silver vs. plated items:

Brands We Cannot Purchase

The following brands are almost always silver-plated. We cannot purchase plated items as there is not enough recoverable silver to cover refining costs.

  • Rogers (Rogers Bros., Wm. Rogers, Rogers & Bros., Rogers Sons) — note: the year 1847 stamped on Rogers pieces is the company's founding date, not the silver purity.
  • Community (Oneida Community) — popular electroplated flatware line.
  • Regency — electroplated silver items.
  • National Silver (marked NS or National) — base metal plating.
  • International Silver — predominantly silver-plated sets.
  • Wm. A. Rogers — different from the sterling Rogers lines; check for EP or EPNS stamp.
  • Any piece stamped EP, EPNS, EPBM, A1, AA, or TRIPLE

What to Do With Silver-Plated Items

If your silverware turns out to be plated, we are not the right buyer — but your items are not worthless. Some antique dealers, consignment shops, and online platforms (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji) buy plated flatware for decorative use. Plated pieces from well-known makers like Birks or Tiffany may carry collector value beyond the metal content.

How your silver is verified and priced, answered before you visit.

How do you verify the fineness of my silver?
XRF testing confirms whether an item is 800, 900, 925 sterling or 999 fine, and you watch the reading during the appraisal. A stamp is a useful starting point rather than the final measurement, so every piece is tested.
Do you buy sterling silverware and flatware sets?
Yes. Flatware sets, trays, tea services and hollowware in 800, 900 and 925 sterling are all welcome, and complete sets earn our strongest per-ounce pricing.
Are knife blades and weighted bases paid as silver?
No. Stainless-steel blades, the cement or resin filling in weighted candlestick bases, and filled or hollow handles are not payable silver. They are identified during testing and handled separately from the payable quantity.
Does tarnish reduce what my silver is worth?
No. Ordinary surface tarnish does not change the underlying fineness, so there is no need to polish anything beforehand. Each item is still inspected and tested exactly as it arrives.
Why is my offer different from the silver spot price?
Spot is a wholesale reference for fine silver, not an automatic payout for a physical object. Fineness, item category, payable quantity and processing all affect the applicable rate, which tracks live silver market data supplied by MetalPriceAPI.
How quickly do you pay for silver?
Same day. Most transactions are completed within 30 minutes of appraisal, with payment by cash, Interac e-Transfer, cheque or wire.
Do you buy incomplete or mismatched silverware sets?
Yes. Partial sets, odd pieces, and mismatched flatware are all welcome. We buy by weight and silver content, not by completeness. A set missing half its forks is still worth bringing in.
What is the difference between 800, 900, and 925 silver?
These numbers refer to the silver content per thousand parts. 925 (sterling) contains 92.5% silver and is the most common standard in North America. 900 silver is 90% pure and appears frequently in older Canadian and American sets. 800 silver is 80% pure and is typical of European and German silverware. All three are genuine silver and we buy all three. Your offer reflects the actual fineness confirmed by XRF.
Does the brand name on my silverware tell me if it is sterling?
Not reliably. Many well-known brands like Rogers, Community, and Birks produced both sterling and plated lines under the same name. The stamp on the back of the piece — not the brand — is what matters. Look for 925, STERLING, 800, or 900 for genuine silver. Stamps like EP, EPNS, or SILVERPLATE indicate plating. When in doubt, bring it in for a free XRF test.
Do you buy silver tea services and trays?
Yes. Silver tea pots, coffee pots, creamers, sugar bowls, serving trays, and complete tea services are welcome. These are often among the highest-value pieces in an estate collection because of their weight. Weighted or hollow bases are identified separately during testing and do not count toward payable silver weight.
Do you buy silver candelabras and hollowware?
Yes, if they are sterling. Many candelabras have weighted bases filled with resin or cement for stability — that filler is not payable silver and is excluded from the weight calculation. The silver shell of the piece is still tested and paid for. Bring them in and we will sort out what is payable during the free appraisal.
How much is my sterling silverware worth?
The value depends on three things: the weight of payable silver (excluding blades, fillers, and non-silver parts), the confirmed fineness (800, 900, or 925), and the current silver spot price from MetalPriceAPI updated daily. A full 12-piece sterling flatware set in 925 can be worth several hundred dollars depending on weight and current market rates. The only way to know your specific number is to bring the pieces in for a free weigh-in and XRF test.
