What the Tiny Number Inside Your Ring Means
Most jewellery carries a purity stamp inside a ring band, on a clasp tongue or on the back of a pendant. Here is what each one means before anyone tests anything.
| Stamp | Purity | Where you usually see it |
|---|---|---|
| 375 · 9K | 37.5% gold | British and older European jewellery; uncommon in Canada. |
| 417 · 10K | 41.7% gold | The most common karat for North American everyday chains and rings. |
| 585 · 14K | 58.5% gold | The Canadian default for wedding bands and better-quality chains. |
| 750 · 18K | 75% gold | Italian and designer jewellery, and most diamond mounts. |
| 875 · 21K | 87.5% gold | Middle Eastern and South Asian bridal jewellery. |
| 916 · 22K | 91.6% gold | Indian and Gulf gold, often deep yellow and soft to the touch. |
| 999 · 24K | 99.9% gold | Investment pieces, gift bars and some Asian chains. |
| 925 · Sterling | 92.5% silver | Silver rings, bangles and chains; also stamped STER or STG. |
| GF · GP · HGE · RGP | Plated or filled | A thin gold layer over base metal. No recoverable value, so it is handed back. |
No stamp, or a stamp you do not trust? It changes nothing. Hallmarks wear away, get polished off during resizing, and are occasionally simply wrong — which is why the offer is never based on the stamp. Every piece goes under an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyser that reads the actual elemental composition in seconds, and you watch the reading appear. A piece that measures 17.1K is paid as 17.1K rather than being rounded down to 16K. The full method is set out in how gold offers are calculated and how silver offers are calculated.
What Decides Your Offer
Four Numbers, All of Them Shown
- ✓Tested purity, not the hallmarkXRF measures what the metal actually is. Mixed-karat lots are separated so 18K is never paid at the 10K rate.
- ✓Payable weight, stones excludedDiamonds, gemstones, watch movements, spring bars and steel clasps are deducted or valued separately — never weighed as gold.
- ✓Today’s spot price, stated as a percentageThe rate is quoted as a share of the live market price supplied by MetalPriceAPI, so the offer can be checked against any public quote.
- ✓Volume tier on the whole lotEverything is weighed together, so a drawer of odd single earrings can lift the whole visit into a better tier.
- ✓Written offer, then your decisionTake the written offer away and compare it. Free appraisal, no obligation, and a receipt issued on every completed sale.
Before You Sell
When Jewellery Is Worth More Than Its Metal
A metal buyer is the right answer for most jewellery and the wrong answer for some of it. Knowing which is which before you walk in is worth more than any percentage point.
Sell it for the metal
- Broken, bent or snapped pieces nobody will wear again
- Single earrings, orphan charms and worn-thin chains
- Dated styles and unwanted gifts sitting in a drawer
- Plain bands, hollow chains and mass-produced 10K and 14K
- Sterling silver jewellery with no maker of note
These are worth what the gold or silver in them is worth, and a tested, spot-linked offer is the honest ceiling.
Try a specialist first
- Signed designer jewellery — Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef, Bulgari
- Certified diamonds above roughly one carat, with paperwork
- Antique, Art Deco and period pieces in original condition
- Collector watches, where the movement carries the value
- Anything with real sentimental weight you may regret
These can be worth several times their scrap value through an auction house or a specialist dealer. FairGold Montreal says so out loud rather than buying them at metal price, and will still test them for free so you know the floor. More on choosing a route: selling gold in Montreal.

Best Price Guarantee on Gold Jewellery
Bring us any written offer on your gold jewellery from a registered Montreal gold buyer and we will match it or beat it — on the spot, before you decide.
The guarantee is possible because of how jewellery is tested here. XRF measures actual elemental composition instead of relying on a hallmark or an acid scratch test, so a piece that reads 17.1 karats is paid as 17.1 karats rather than rounded down to 16. On a mixed jewellery lot that rounding is where most of the money quietly disappears at other counters.
Applies to: gold jewellery only (not pure gold bullion, bars or coins, and not silver), against a written offer from a registered gold buyer in the Montreal area.
