What the Tiny Number Inside Your Ring Means
Most jewellery carries a purity stamp inside a ring band, on a clasp tongue or on the back of a pendant. Here is what each one means before anyone tests anything.

No stamp, or a stamp you do not trust? It changes nothing. Hallmarks wear away, get polished off during resizing, and are occasionally simply wrong — which is why the offer is never based on the stamp. Every piece goes under an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyser that reads the actual elemental composition in seconds, and you watch the reading appear. Payable Weight, Part by Part
Clasps, Findings and What Comes Off the Weight
Almost every piece of jewellery is a mix of metals. What you get paid for is the tested precious metal only, so it is worth knowing in advance which parts count and which come off before the scale figure becomes the payable figure.

Why this matters when you compare two offers. Two buyers can quote what sounds like the same rate and pay very differently, because one weighs the whole item — steel clasp, stone and all — and applies a lower percentage, while the other separates the payable metal first. The only way to compare them is to ask each buyer for the two numbers separately: the payable weight in grams at each purity, and the rate as a percentage of today’s spot.
